Any Occasion Party Idea: Popcorn Bar

Popcorn! Who doesn’t love those magical little popped kernels that can be flavored with…well, practically anything!?!  Eat them plain and you have a low-calorie snack or eat them with toppings and you have a party in your mouth (yes, I really did just type that!). What’s not to love? Consider a popcorn bar for your next party and personalize it with creative mix-ins, toppings and flavors. This can be a fun, fairly low cost idea that your guests will enjoy. (When I originally started writing this article I was going to suggest that a popcorn bar is a fun idea for a kids party but then I realized that it’s a fun idea for ANY party.)

The popcorn: You can order the popcorn pre-popped, pop it yourself before the party or have a popcorn machine at your party for freshly popped popcorn. If you want to order the popcorn pre-popped, Popcorn Wagon and The Popcorn Factory offer a wide variety of popcorn flavors and they will ship to your location. Your local party rental store should offer popcorn machines for rent or you could buy a popcorn maker. Tip: Offer classic butter, one of the other three classic flavors (cheese, white cheddar or caramel) and whatever other fun flavors sound good to you as your base flavors.

The mix-ins, toppings & flavored popcorn: This is the fun part. The mix-in options are endless: savory, sweet, salty, chewy, melty, cold, warm and so on. Some favorites are peanuts, raisins, pumpkin seeds, M&Ms, bits of Twizzlers, melted chocolate, peanut butter cups, cotton candy, confectioners sugar, regular sugar, bacon bits, bits of jalapenos, Parmesan cheese & truffle oil, dried cranberries, gummy bears, sprinkles, marshmallows, chocolate covered pretzels and bits of cookie dough. In addition to mix-ins, don’t forget about shakeable toppings such as cayenne pepper, white pepper and cinnamon or flavored salts. Instead of mix-ins, you could serve super creative popcorn flavor combinations such as French Toast or Coconut Curry, as suggested by Luxirare.

The decor: Match your popcorn bar to your overall theme and be creative! If you’re hosting a 10 year old’s Spiderman-themed party use Spiderman tablecloth and blue and red mix-ins. If you’re going for a more refined look, hire a waiter to place popcorn in beautiful single serve bags that match your decor and present the mix-ins in beautiful crystal goblets.

There are so many ways to be creative with your popcorn bar’s decor. It all depends on the look you are going for. Need some ideas? Check out what folks on Pinterest having been doing with their popcorn bars:
